Cloudflare has introduced a way for website owners to charge AI bots for access, an idea with obvious appeal to small publishers squeezed by automated traffic.
The problem it targets
In 2025, an online small business forum that had run for 15 years went offline. It earned just enough ad revenue to cover hosting. Then AI bots arrived in force, first mining the forum for training data and then pinging it constantly to tap live conversations among small business owners. Adding Cloudflare protection slowed the traffic but did not stop enough of it, and the bandwidth strain pushed hosting costs above revenue. The forum's owner came to see that the real customer was no longer advertisers or members but the language models consuming the content, with no way to bill them.
How Monetization Gateway works
On July 1, 2026, Cloudflare announced Monetization Gateway, which Cloudflare says lets customers put a price on web pages, datasets, APIs or MCP tools, in its words "any asset protected by Cloudflare."
When a bot requests a URL, it receives an HTTP 402 response containing a real-time price. If the bot accepts, it pays in stablecoins, which are passed through to the endpoint. Cloudflare manages payments and settlement on blockchain rails, and the exchange takes less than a second. Cloudflare's example base fee is $0.001, a tenth of a cent per call.
Cloudflare's reasoning
Cloudflare argues that agents do not view ads or hold monthly subscriptions. They read a page or pull a data feed once and move on, and AI crawlers already request content from a hundred to tens of thousands of times for each visitor they send back. The company says this calls for usage-based pricing, which was historically hard because businesses had to build their own metering and accounting, and many fell back on per-seat pricing.
Agents change that, Cloudflare said, because one agent can do a team's work around the clock and can make thousands of micropayments without a person approving each one. Stablecoins such as Open USD and USDC allow tiny transfers with negligible fees and sub-second settlement, which it says other payment rails cannot match today.
What it means for the forum
The forum remains offline, and AI bots still request its URLs each day. If the companies behind them decide the data is worth paying for, a tool like this could offer a route back, and a way for many web businesses to bill their actual customers.
