- 1Seán Murray says he first floated the theory in February 2024.
- 2He cites two cypherpunk list registrations and a 1997 cryptography webpage.
- 3The claim rests on circumstantial evidence and has not been confirmed by Dorsey.
Seán Murray says he is the originator of the theory that Block CEO Jack Dorsey is Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, and that new findings have strengthened the case. The claim is circumstantial and unconfirmed, and it is presented here as the author's argument rather than established fact.
What Murray says he found
Murray says he first considered the idea in February 2024. After what he calls extensive research, he describes the evidence as "incredible circumstantial evidence". He says he was the first to find that Dorsey was registered on the cypherpunk mailing list under two different email addresses. He also says he was the first to recover Dorsey's personal webpage dedicated to cryptography from 1997, along with the related home page, both preserved in the Internet Archive.
The points in his thread
Murray summarized the case in a post on X dated August 2, 2025. It rests on a few parallels:
- Bitcoin's source code is written in C++, and Murray says it is now confirmed that Dorsey coded in C++ as far back as the mid-1990s.
- The Bitcoin white paper references C, and he says Dorsey is confirmed to have coded in C in the same period.
- On the pseudonym, he points to "Satoshi" having been the first tweet of Dorsey's best friend.
None of this is direct proof, and the source includes no confirmation from Dorsey.
