NerdWallet's CEO says the way people look for financial answers is shifting toward AI, and that the company is investing in it even though the volume is still small.
From Google to LLMs
Users have traditionally started their financial research on Google, where a search would surface a NerdWallet article and send them to its site. That behavior is changing. As the company has said in earlier quarters, some traffic now arrives from large language models. It remains a small share of the total, but those visitors tend to convert at a high rate.
On the Q2 earnings call, CEO Tim Chen said intent is extremely high when someone arrives through an LLM wanting to transact in a marketplace. It remains a pretty small part of the business, he said, but it is an area of investment and growth.
"The story is still being written"
Analysts have kept pressing on the subject. Chen has said the story is still being written, but he argued that enough has changed to show where things are heading. He pointed to billions of weekly active users across major LLMs, saying mass adoption is already happening. The effect on NerdWallet's educational content over the past three years has largely played out, he said, and the company is beginning to see what the future looks like.
We are in the middle of an AI transition that is changing how people get their answers to their money questions.
Brand as the differentiator
Chen also said a trusted brand will be critical in this period, particularly for marketplaces and high-stakes financial guidance, and that NerdWallet is well positioned there.
