Stripe, currently in the news for a $159 billion valuation and a reported interest in acquiring PayPal, originated 81,000 merchant cash advances and business loans in 2025 through Stripe Capital. Stripe did not disclose total funding volume. Comparing with historical data from rival Square Loans suggests a likely range of $800 million to $1.2 billion.
Stripe's impact study
In a recent study of its own customers, Stripe compared businesses that took a Capital offer with similar ones that did not, and found the takers grew 27 percentage points faster over the next year.
The company said the averages hide a wide spread. The fastest-growing decile of financed businesses grew more than 3 times faster than comparable peers, and the next decile grew nearly 100 points faster. As an example, Xirsys, a California server hosting business, used Stripe Capital financing to set up additional servers in China, India and Japan, then doubled its revenue. Stripe added that businesses with low credit scores also saw a boost, growing 11 to 18 percentage points faster once financed.
The PayPal angle
Stripe's rumored interest in PayPal is notable partly because PayPal runs its own business loan program. PayPal funded $2.2 billion to small businesses last year, down from $3 billion in 2024.
