Upstart says its second quarter showed the lender can grow, keep credit performing and widen margins at once. CEO Paul Gu made the case on the Q2 earnings call.
The "truism" argument
Gu recalled telling investors at last year's AI Day that lending's oldest assumption is that technology stays constant, so a lender cannot have growth, strong credit performance and profitability together. That does not hold for Upstart, he said. The company did not have to trade one for another this quarter, and he called that combination the clearest evidence that its AI advantage is real and compounding.
Second-half plans
Upstart offers personal, auto and home loans. It said it would double down in the second half of the year, and described its core personal loan business as its "superpower," with unusually strong margins.
This quarter, we delivered all three: we grew, our credit performed, and we expanded margins.
Bank charter
Upstart also received conditional approval from the OCC to establish its own bank. The company said the charter would let it reduce operational, regulatory and financial complexity for itself and for its third-party capital partners.
It is one of many fintechs either applying for a bank charter or buying a chartered bank.
