Search used to mean Google. A study shared by OpenAI suggests people now use large language models in a similar way.
Of ChatGPT interactions in the study, 21.3% were about seeking information, 28.3% about practical guidance and 7.5% about technical help. The data came from 1.1 million sampled conversations between May 15, 2024 and June 26, 2025.
Where ChatGPT differs
The report says generative AI stands apart because it can produce writing, code, spreadsheets and other digital products. It adds that ChatGPT is more flexible than web search even for traditional uses such as seeking information, since users receive customized responses and can follow up.
Moving into commerce
Last week OpenAI announced a partnership with Stripe on in-chat checkout. Stripe describes the flow this way: a user asks for product recommendations in chat and, when ready to buy, sees a Stripe-powered checkout inline.
ChatGPT has also begun offering autocomplete suggestions, as Google does. Typing "line of cred" into the query box, for example, surfaces "line of credit options for small businesses."
