CoinDesk has released a one-hour video podcast examining Sean Murray's theory that Jack Dorsey is Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin. The episode is available here. Satoshi's identity has never been confirmed.
The theory's backbone
Murray first proposed the idea in February 2024. His most recent major summary, a post on August 2, 2025, lays out clues that include:
- Bitcoin's source code is in C++, and Murray says Dorsey is now confirmed to have coded in C++ as far back as the mid-1990s.
- The Bitcoin white paper uses C, and Murray says Dorsey is likewise confirmed to have coded in C since the mid-1990s.
- The name Satoshi was, he says, the first tweet posted by Dorsey's best friend.
Rebuttals and the podcast
One prominent Bitcoin developer tried to rebut the theory. Murray argues that effort overlooked that Dorsey could post online from a smartphone, and he answered the developer's two attempts (first and second).
Murray also notes that the podcast's producers did not contact him while making it.
