Stripe and private equity firm Advent have made an offer of $53 billion to acquire PayPal, a deal that would bring two of the largest payments-based small business lenders under one roof.
The offer
Stripe, Block and Advent told PayPal in April that they were jointly interested in acquiring it. Block has since dropped out, and the latest offer, now public, comes from Stripe and Advent alone. Reuters has covered the joint interest. It remains to be seen whether a deal will happen. The pairing confirms an earlier rumor of Stripe's interest in PayPal.
What it means for SMB finance
Stripe and PayPal are known as payment processors, but the two originate more than $3 billion a year in MCAs and short-term business loans combined. PayPal's origination volume exceeded Stripe's in 2025.
PayPal has had its own credit challenges. It is one of the few online payment platforms to have struggled with bad debt in its merchant funding program, and it never used its lending offerings as a lever to grow the broader PayPal business.
If the deal does proceed, the two merchant funding programs could end up under the same ownership.
